چکیده

Several pathogens are known to be transmitted by arthropods. One of the most relevant, in economic terms, affecting animals is bluetongue virus. Its vectors several species Culicoides midges. In Europe, considered main vector imicola and obsoletus, though other may implicated at different levels. present work, activity these between sunset sunrise from May November analyzed according their captures a rotator bottle collector adapted light trap. Additionally, populations two areas Mallorca (Spain) with characteristics (rural vs. urban) compared. The results indicated that June month higher abundance C. obsoletus our climatic conditions—being active during first three hours after sunset. Conversely, reached maximum level October, were more evenly distributed night. Collections revealed composed same species; however, sex ratio presented marked differences. These add valuable insight into ecology used design accurate strategies control diseases associated Culicoides.

Biting midges belonging to the genus Culicoides (Diptera: Ceratopogonidae) were collected by Mosquito Magnet(®) and black light traps at 5 sites on Jeju-do, Republic of Korea (Korea), from May-November 2013 to determine species diversity and seasonal distribution. A total of 4,267 specimens were collected, of which 99.9% were female. The most common species was Culicoides tainanus (91.8%), foll...

This report constitutes the first study of Culicoides spp. and their seasonal abundance at Al-Ahsa, the largest oasis in the Eastern Province of Saudi Arabia. New Jersey light traps were used to collect the midges at Mastock farm and Al-Mansura village. The mean monthly abundance was determined from October 1993 to October 1994. The mean monthly number per trap reached its minimum value during ...

Occurrence of Culicoides spp. (Diptera: Ceratopogonidae) in Tunisia, with emphasis on the bluetongue vector Culicoides imicola.

Following the bluetongue (BT) outbreaks in Tunisia from 1999 to 2002, BTV (bluetongue virus) serotype 2 was isolated; however, no entomological investigation was performed. In the study presented here, we assessed the Culicoides species populations (particularly C. imicola) in proximity to the BT outbreaks locations, both as a retrospective analysis and to update the list of Culicoides species ...

Hyaluronidase Activity in Saliva of European Culicoides (Diptera: Ceratopogonidae)

Biting midges of the genus Culicoides transmit pathogens of veterinary importance such as bluetongue virus (Reoviridae: Orbivirus). The saliva of Culicoides is known to contain bioactive molecules including peptides and proteins with vasodilatory and immunomodulative properties. In this study, we detected activity of enzyme hyaluronidase in six Culicoides species that commonly occur in Europe a...
